Reliability of Nondestructive Evaluation Methods for Bridge Decks

Project No: 115560

Target Completion Date: May 31, 2024 Structures

About the project:

The purpose of this study is to determine the reliability of rapid-scanning Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Infra-red Thermography (IRT) techniques for detecting deterioration in concrete bridge decks. Data collected for two interstate bridges in the Staunton District, where both in-depth evaluations and rapid-scanning non-destructive evaluations (NDE) have been recently performed, will be compared. Using statistical methods, the reliability of the rapid-scanning GPR and IRT technologies will be assessed. In addition, recently developed time-lapse thermography, which is an advancement of the IRT method, will be employed on these two bridge decks to compare with the in-depth evaluation results.
