||Guidelines for Edge and Centerline Markings on 16- to 20-Foot-Wide Roads

Residency and regional traffic engineering staff at the Virginia Department of Transportation postulate that low-cost improvements to pavement markings such as centerlines and edge lines – applied either singularly or in combination – improve safety on narrow roads until design improvements can be programmed. This concerns mostly secondary roads, but it also includes narrow primary roads
This research will develop a set of guidelines for VDOT traffic engineers to use when making decisions on marking edge and centerlines on low-volume, narrow roads. The research team will examine the effectiveness, in terms of safety, of longitudinal pavement markings on these types of roads. In addition, the study will compare the costs and benefits associated with such markings.
