Title: Design, Installation and Initial Condition Assessment of a High-Strength, Corrosion-Resistant, Steel-Reinforced Concrete Bridge Deck

Abstract:

This project will employ recently developed structural design guidelines, tools, and details to design, construct, and assess a reinforced-concrete bridge deck with high-strength, corrosion-resistant ASTM A1035 steel rebar.

The bridge to be constructed and monitored will replace an existing bridge in Bland County, VA, which carries US 52 over Wolf Creek. The bridge is a 74 ft-long steel stringer simple span with two traffic lanes.

Specifically, No. 4 bars will be substituted for No. 5 bars. A recent study demonstrated the potential first-cost and life cycle cost benefits of high-strength, corrosion-resistant reinforcing bars in bridge decks. Decreasing reinforcing bar size was specifically identified as a solution for providing structural performance that was more consistent with a typical Grade 60 rebar Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bridge deck at lower cost.

Proposed design guidelines also were formulated and validated to account for high strength and gradually yielding rebar stress-strain properties to ensure limited cracking and ductile flexural behavior at an ultimate limit state. These guidelines will serve as a cornerstone of this pilot study.
