Title: Investigation of Roller Compacted Concrete for Use in Pavements in Virginia
Contact: H. Celik Ozyildirim
Project No.: 102892
Target Date: 12/16/2016
Abstract: Roller compacted concrete (RCC) is a stiff mixture of aggregate, cementitious materials and water, that is placed using asphalt pavers, compacted by vibratory rollers and hardens into concrete (ACI 325.10R).  For pavement applications, RCC has low water content, exhibits no slump, does not contain reinforcement, tie-bars or dowels, does not require slip-form paving equipment, and can be opened to traffic shortly after placement.  RCC can produce a low cost roadway compared to conventional asphalt or concrete pavements (Piggott, 1999).  Complications may include lack of smoothness required for high-speed roadways, or raveling and cracking (Nanni, 1996).  These may be addressed through asphalt overlay or grinding.  The study will evaluate RCC for use in Virginia using locally available materials and asphalt paving equipment.  A comprehensive literature survey and laboratory work will be conducted to understand the fundamental properties of RCC and evaluate related testing procedures.
