Title: Real-Time Prediction of Vehicle Locations in a Connected-Vehicle Environment

Abstract:

Wireless communication between vehicles and the transportation infrastructure, known as the “connected-vehicle environment,” has the potential to greatly improve safety and mobility. However, the rollout of such technologies in passenger vehicles is likely to take 30 years or more, during which time traffic will be a mix of equipped and unequipped vehicles.

The purpose of this study is to develop algorithms that analyze the behavior of equipped vehicles and look for unusual driver behavior. An unexpected deceleration, for example, may indicate a driver is slowing down to avoid a previously undetected vehicle.

This analysis will help build a real-time rolling estimation of the number, locations and speeds of unequipped vehicles. This can then be used to improve the measurement of performance and increase the benefits experienced by other mobility applications. The results will better position VDOT for a pilot study or wide-scale implementation of connected-vehicle technologies.
