Title: Feasibility of Integrating Congestion Back-Propagation and Queue-Dissipation Models with Detector Data to Estimate Incident-Related Travel Time on I-66 in Near Real Time

Abstract: This study investigates the feasibility of using congestion-backward propogation models and queue-dissipation models in conjunction with incident location and detector data to estimate the elements of incident-related travel time in near real time.  In particular, the research will estimate the time required to travel from an upstream detector location to the incident-related congestion, as well as the time needed to pass the incident location once it has been cleared.  When provided information on travel time, drivers familiar with the road network may alter their route and avoid the incident, mitigating the effects of the incident on traffic flow along the immediately affected road.
