Title: Feasibility of Offsite Airport Terminals in Improving Landside Access to Airports
Contact: John S. Miller
Project No.: 82897
Target Date: 05/26/2008
Abstract: An alternative means for providing landside access to airports is the use of offsite terminal.  Such a terminal serves an airport and its users by providing transit services to and from the main terminal, baggage handling, check-in, and passenger information.  This research proposes to study the offsite terminals of the past and the present to determine reasons behind their limited success and explore the feasibility of offsite terminals of the future.  Potential objectives of an offsite terminal, both from the perspective of the passenger as well as the airport operator, and their corresponding performance measures have been outlined.  Data elements necessary for developing the performance measures have also been identified.  The framework of a model has been presented that measures the desirability of an offsite terminal given the conditions under which they operate.  Finally, the study will develop guidelines that incorporate necessary steps in the planning of an offsite terminal
