Title: Evaluation of the Strength of Cement Treated Aggregate for Pavement Bases

Abstract: Cement treated aggregate (CTA) is commonly used as a bearing layer for pavements that are placed over weak soil subgrades. Currently, VDOT specifies the aggregate as 21A with 4% cement by weight when used in constructing CTA. However, field performance of CTA has been inconsistent, with some bases performing well, but others demonstrating a lack of durability. This work proposes an experimental investigation into the physical and chemical behavior of CTA, in order to identify the factors that contribute to the strength of CTA. Performance will be quantified in the laboratory by unconfined compression tests. The investigation will explore the effects of grain size distribution, base aggregate mineralogy and geochemistry, freeze-thaw cycles, moisture content, and cement type on the performance of CTA.
