Title: Feasibility of Using Monotonic Loading-based Tests to Evaluate Rutting Performance of Asphalt Mixtures
Contact: Ilker Boz
Project No.: 117336
Target Date: 01/31/2023
Abstract: The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of several monotonic loading-based tests as a screening tool to evaluate the rutting potential of asphalt mixtures in Virginia. The scope of the work will include subjecting 10 to 15 Virginia plant-produced surface mixtures with A and D designations to a suite of laboratory tests. Phase 1 of the research will attempt to correlate the monotonic loading-based test results to the test results obtained from Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA), a tool VDOT currently uses to screen out rut susceptible asphalt mixtures. Phase 2 will evaluate the monotonic loading-based tests to identify what test configuration and parameter is most suitable for evaluating the rutting potential of asphalt mixtures. Phase 2 will also identify a performance threshold criteria for a selected test to be used during the mix design stage leading to improved performance-based metrics for design, as well as quality control and acceptance.
