Title: The Effectiveness of Deer Advisory Messages on VDOT's Changeable Message Signs:Phase II
Contact: Bridget M. Donaldson
Project No.: 110606
Target Date: 10/01/2018
Abstract: Following recommendations from an earlier VTRC study, in 2015 VDOT began to post animal advisory messages on the changeable message signs along I-64 in the Afton Mountain area in response to observations of frequent deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs) and high roadside deer activity in this area, particularly in the fall months. A followup limited scope study was recently conducted that suggested this approach might have had a positive impact on vehicle speeds and DVCs. The purpose of the study is to conduct more extensive analysis of speed and crash data on this segment of I-64 to more conclusively determine the effects that the deer advisory messages have on reducing DVCs.
