| Abstract: |
To reduce the potential effects of highway runoff on receiving waters, transportation agencies are starting to deploy decentralized stormwater-management systems, known as low impact development strategies, as alternatives to centralized best management practices.
A pilot project incorporating 47 low impact development systems will be installed in various patterns along a section of Lorton Road in Fairfax County that will be widened.
While low impact development practices for stormwater management are becoming more common, knowledge gaps still exist concerning their long-term performance and maintenance, particularly along highways.
This study will determine both the long-term effectiveness of multiple low impact development systems for mitigating adverse impacts of highway stormwater runoff and the maintenance requirements, procedures and operating costs associated with such systems in highway settings.
