||An Analysis of Benefits of Using Storage Tanks to Store Stormwater Runoff Generated at VDOT’s Maintenance Facilities
G. Michael Fitch
Many ponds originally constructed to collect stormwater at Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) chemical storage facilities are nearing the end of their design life – i.e., the rubber membrane and/or asphalt lining have degraded.
This study will determine if there are benefits in transitioning from the use of open ponds to storage tanks to capture and store stormwater runoff collected at VDOT’s chemical storage facilities.
The study also will analyze the costs versus the benefits of using storage tanks to capture and store stormwater as compared to the open pond systems more commonly used now. The research team will base its analysis on the monitoring and evaluation of one or more VDOT locations undergoing a retrofit from an open system to a tank-based system for storage.
