VDOT specifications permit the use of several “trenchless” pipe-repair technologies, which allow the repair of existing underground pipes in place rather than the conventional method of unearthing and replacing sections of damaged pipe. The overall environmental implications of these trenchless alternatives are not completely understood. Phase I of this study included a frequency-of-use determination of each pipe-repair product VDOT uses as well as company interviews and installation observations. Information from Phase I will help determine water-sampling strategies and analyses to conduct in Phase II.  Findings from this study will provide VDOT with (1) environmental considerations to include in a pipe-repair selection guide for choosing the most appropriate pipe-rehabilitation product, based on specific site conditions, and (2) recommendations for specifications to prevent environmental contamination resulting from the installation or use of the product.
