Title: Use of Nanoclays to Improve the Properties of Concrete
Contact: H. Celik Ozyildirim
Project No.: 87216
Target Date: 02/24/2010
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate nanoclays in concrete and compare their characteristics to widely used low-permeability concretes using conventional pozzolans or slag.  Nanoclays are pozzolans with very small particle size (less than 100 nanometers) and therefore a very high surface area.  Concretes will be prepared using nanoclays and will be compared to low-permeability concretes using fly ash, slag and silica fume.  The fresh and hardened concrete properties will be determined.  The microstructure of the concretes also will be observed using an atomic force microscope.
