Project No.: |

Target Date: |

Abstract: |
Many of VDOT's professionals most experienced in the maintenance of old metal truss bridges, including their disassembly and relocation, have retired, taking with them a wealth of practical experience. There is much to be gained by collecting the knowledge gained by this group of engineers and senior field personnel and preserving it in a form to serve the needs of their successors.
Carefully structured interviews, in which various aspects of the design, construction, evaluation, disassembly, moving, and rehabilitation of historic struvtures are documented, will be of immense value. Information gained through the interview process will be complied into a manual of best practices targeted for engineers and others involved with the preservation of historic bridges. Establishment of an on-line team room is also envisioned. The research effort requires expertise in structural engineering, architectural history, operations, and knowledge management. |
