VDOT has successfully used Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) to rehabilitate severely deteriorated roadways for more than a decade. Recent studies show that one of the main distress mechanisms of early FDR projects is transverse cracking. Since many of these projects used Portland cement as the stabilizing agent, it is suspected that these cracks are a result of shrinkage cracking of the FDR layer. In an effort to reduce the instances of transverse cracking, this study proposes to investigate several potential methods to reduce the instances of shrinkage cracking in FDR layers. This study will investigate laboratory-based methods for assessing the shrinkage cracking potential of cement-based FDR materials in the laboratory and then evaluate the most promising concepts in field-based applications.
