||Work-Zone Safety Performance Measures for Virginia
Safety performance measures that can quantify work-zone impacts objectively must be established to assess, track and compare them over time. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) currently uses the raw numbers of annual fatalities and injuries from work-zone crashes as statewide work zone safety performance measures.
VDOT needs more robust measures to evaluate work zone safety in an objective manner statewide and for specific assessments of individual work zones. Its last five-year work-zone safety report was produced using 1999-2003 data and should be updated.
The goals of this project are to produce a report of 2004-2008 Virginia Work-Zone Crash Facts as a stand-alone document and to develop a more robust set of work-zone safety performance measures for Virginia.
The researchers will consider both program-level and project-level measures. All roads that VDOT adminsters will be included for the program-level measures. However, for the project-level measures, the scope is limited to interstate highways because of data availabilty.
