Title: Feasibility of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement for Use as Road Base and Sub-Base Material
Contact: Edward J. Hoppe
Project No.: 00080
Target Date: 01/09/2015
Abstract: This project will study the feasibility of using reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in roadway base and sub-base, as specifically articulated in the Virginia Department of  Transportation’s (VDOT) Business Plan for FY ’14-FY ’15.

One of the tasks will be a survey of RAP stockpiles in Virginia to evaluate the quantity and the physical characteristics of potentially available material. The study also will address the state of the practice at other state highway agencies.

Some limited laboratory testing will be conducted, including gradation, asphalt content and assessment of geologic origin. Potential mechanical and chemical stabilization methods will be considered. The results of this study are intended as proposed guidance for the use of RAP by VDOT’s Materials Division.
