Title: Determination of Mechanical Properties for Cement-Treated Aggregate Base
Contact: Harikrishnan Nair
Project No.: 104524
Target Date: 05/31/2017
Abstract:

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) currently uses the AASHTO 1993 Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, which employs structural layer coefficients (empirical values) for specific material layers in a pavement structure.

VDOT is now implementing the AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) and deploying AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software, which applies mechanical properties of pavement materials to determine the appropriate design of pavement layers.

Work within VDOT and around the nation has determined appropriate mechanical properties for hot-mix asphalt, untreated aggregate-base materials and typical subgrade soils. However, mechanical properties for cement-treated, aggregate-base materials have not been established.

The purpose of this project is to recommend a standard mix design process and to determine appropriate corresponding mechanical properties for cement-treated aggregate base, which will be used statewide as MEPDG input parameters.
