Title: Pilot Implementation of a Resource Guide to Enhance Incorporation of Safety into the Regional Planning Process
Contact: John S. Miller
Project No.: 99049
Target Date: 11/30/2011
Abstract:

This project is the implementation of a resource guide for integrating safety into the transportation planning process. It will use a Virginia metropolitan planning organization’s area as a pilot. Developed over a 30-month period in an earlier study, the resource guide contains various examples relating to safety planning integration. It is comparable to a reference manual or a textbook.

This research is expected to yield two deliverables: validation of portions of the resource guide and identification of portions of the guide that need improvement. Participants in this pilot will include representatives from the Federal Highway Administration’s Richmond Division, the Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission (RVARC) and VDOT’s Salem District, Traffic Engineering Division and Transportation Mobility Planning Division.

The pilot will focus on two issues of interest to RVARC: use of crash data for the cities of Roanoke and Salem and incorporating safety into the Peters Creek Hollins Community Plan.
