||Investigation of the Effect of Wet Curing on Durability Parameters of Hydraulic Cement Concretes
Wet curing of HCC is being emphasized and some DOTs have instituted requirements for up to 14 days wet curing for HPC. However, some concrete technologists have suggested that although the prompt application of moist curing to prevent water loss is critical, the benefits of moist curing diminish fairly rapidly so that beyond a few days little actual benefit is realized with low w/cm concretes and a few have suggested that extended wet curing may be detrimental by contributing to increased cracking. The use of absorptive lightweight fine aggregate has been proposed as a method of providing water for internal curing of low w/cm concretes and thus achieving better curing of such concretes.While VDOT has adopted rerquirements for wet curing of bridge decks, the construction industry has resisted such a move raising concerns about practicality and actual benefits. This study will examine these issues and provide information that will be useful in better defining appropriate curing practices.
