Purpose:

Conduct research and investigations associated with planning for transportation infrastructure improvements and system efficiencies, as well as the application of legal and operational methods to help reduce the frequency of motor vehicle crashes.

Research focuses on

  • impediments to improved coordination between transportation planning and land use planning
  • methods to achieve greater control of access to the state maintained highway system
  • risk management of VDOT’s infrastructure and activities
  • the impact of safety and planning-related changes in state and federal statutes
  • the effectiveness of driver-related safety countermeasures
  • safety-related traffic-engineering issues in areas such as roadway geometry, congestion management, and signing.
