Purpose:

Conduct research in history, environmental science, economics, policy, and the social sciences.

The history and environmental research encompasses studies in the following areas:

  • air and water quality (including stormwater)
  • waste management
  • natural resource protection
  • wetland mitigation
  • identifying and preserving Virginia’s historic and cultural resources

The economics and policy research encompasses studies of:

  • transportation finance
  • VDOT’s business practices
  • economic analyses
  • organizational research on a wide range of topics

The team’s work frequently involves collaboration with engineering disciplines at VTRC and in VDOT and the team has conducted a number of studies requested by the Virginia General Assembly.



The Media Group performs several functions for the Research Council, including preparation of research reports, scientific papers, and a variety of special documents.  As part of this function, the Media Group;
  • advises authors and their managers
  • prepares graphics, photographs, and technical illustrations for documents
  • provides scientific editing and document layout services
  • publishes completed reports on the VTRC public web site

The Media Group also;

  • provides multi-media services (graphic design, original illustrations, computer graphics, and slides)
  • maintains the VTRC public web site
  • edits videos produced in field research projects
  • copies and distributes reports, papers, and other documents produced by Research Council staff
