Title:

The Influence of Communications on Transportation in the Future
Authors:
Zuk, William.
Year: 1984
VTRC No.: 84-R46
Abstract: The report examines the influences of communication on transportation from various points of view. First, the historical influences are discussed as they occurred in the United States between 1776 and the present. Second, probable influences to the year 2010 are presented. Third, the influences are examined through responses to a questionnaire obtained from people in three types of cities. Fourth, influences are described as seen from an individual's perspective. Fifth, influences are discussed from a regional point of view. Finally, influences are presented as they are likely to occur in Virginia in the future. The conclusion reached is that new communication systems will, in general, reduce transportation demands as compared to demands without these systems, although in some situations they will increase transportation demands.
