Title: Carbon-Fiber Grid-Shear Reinforcing for Bridge Beams

Abstract: Virginia has begun using carbon-fiber composite cable (CFCC) prestressing strands in precast concrete piles and bridge beams. With CFCC prestressing, carbon-fiber shear and confining reinforcing also should be used. Stirrups from CFCC prestressing strands are expensive and cannot be bent after fabrication, so mistakes cannot be fixed in the field.

This project will: test beams in the laboratory to compare three commercially available carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars or grids to typical reinforcement as shear reinforcement; study CFRP grids in end-regions of prestressed beams; and develop acceptance test methods for CFRP materials to be used.

The final report will recommend appropriate use of CFRP bars and grids for shear reinforcement, end-region splitting resistance and confinement reinforcement. It also will propose test methods and acceptance criteria for key properties, such as tensile strength, ultimate elongation, elastic modulus, and development and splice lengths.
