Title: Simulation of Adaptive Signal Control

Abstract:

Virginia and other states are increasing their use of adaptive traffic-control (ATC) technology on arterial roads to ease congestion and improve mobility. ATC systems automatically adjust signal-timing parameters, based on changing traffic demand. The growing use of ATC means agencies need to be able to consider such operations accurately in various traffic studies, including traffic impact studies. 

This research project will assess the VISSIM-InSync software-in-the-loop modeling system as a potential tool for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to use to perform consistent, detailed analyses of ATC technologies in a cost-efficient and timely manner.

Since accurate and efficient modeling of traffic flow characteristics, driver behavior and traffic-control operations is critical for obtaining realistic microsimulation results, the model will be calibrated to Virginia conditions. The simulation will be demonstrated on three VDOT corridors running the InSync system.
