Abstract: |
With the growing emphasis on reducing stormwater runoff from transportation facilities and changes in the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board’s Stormwater Management Program Permit Regulations that will take effect July 1, 2014, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is examining how permeable pavements can be used in place of conventional impervious paving materials.
This study will address VDOT-specific questions pertaining to installation costs, constructability, maintenance requirements and the long-term hydraulic performance of permeable pavements. The scope of the study will be limited to the installation, monitoring and evaluation of a single type of permeable pavement – porous asphalt – by way of a pilot project at the park-and-ride facility currently under construction at the interchange of Interstate 66 and Route 234 in Prince William County.
