Title: Unbound Pavement Layer Resilient Modulus for MEPDG

This study will develop regression models to predict resilient modulus from simple soil-test results, such as an unconfined compression test for a representative sample of Virginia’s fine-grained soils. Additionally, the researcher proposes obtaining resilient modulus values for representative coarse-grained soils from Virginia and two base-coarse materials: VDOT’s specified 21A and 21B aggregate blends.  The resilient modulus test is the recommended test to characterize subgrade soil for pavement design in the current 1993 AASHTO pavement design guide as well as the new proposed Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). The anticipated benefits for VDOT include the possibility of using a simpler, cheaper test to characterize fine soils for use in the MEPDG and the determination of resilient modulus values for representative samples of coarse-grained soils and two of the most commonly used base-aggregate materials.
