Title: Methods for Assessing the Polishing Characteristics of Aggregates for Use in Pavement Layers
Contact:
Project No.: 91337
Target Date: 06/25/2010
Abstract:

The selection of aggregates for pavement surface layers plays a critical role in providing good skid resistance through a lengthy service life.  VDOT’s specifications call for nonpolishing aggregate to be used in most surface layers, but it has few methods or tools with which to assess the polishing characteristics of aggregates.

This project will address the problem by developing objective and practical methods to assess the polishing characteristics of aggregates by studying various means and methods to induce wear and assess its impact on aggregates’ surface texture.  It will provide VDOT’s District materials engineers with the tools they need to exercise sound engineering judgment when selecting aggregates to use in pavement surfaces that will save money by increasing the use of local materials, where appropriate, and justify the use of higher-cost aggregate where necessary.
