Title: Validation of Modulus Backcalculation Methods Using 3-D Finite Element Analysis
Project No.: 83149
Target Date: 03/31/2008
Abstract: Three-Dimensional Finite Element Modeling (3DFEM) or simulations of pavement sections can be utilized to study the effects of pavement cracking, FWD loading, truck loading, and thermal gradient on the structural response of flexible pavement, as well as analyzing the FWD deflection data obtained from asphalt pavement systems. The 3DFEM process uses the FWD load-time history and the backcalculated pavement moduli conducted on the measured deflection data produced by a standard FWD deflection test, as inputs in order to attempt to match the measured deflection basin generated by FWD testing. Accurate pavement layer modeling is essential for any valid 3DFEM analysis.  This study will validate static backcalculation procedure(s) currently used by VDOT for pavement design purposes.
