Title: Use of Pocket Computer with Built-in Camera for Characterizing Aggregate Shape, Angularity and Texture for QC/QA
Contact:
Project No.: 82561
Target Date: 02/29/2008
Abstract:

Coarse aggregates take up around 80% by volume for both asphalt concrete and cement concrete. The shape, angularity and texture of coarse aggregates have a significant influence on the performance of asphalt concrete, cement concrete, treated base, and unbound base/subbase. Image based aggregate evaluation of shape, angularity and texture has been widely researched and applied. However, a typical system of imaging and image analysis would cost from few thousands of dollars to $10-20K. It is usually not portable to the field. Recent development in pocket computers that come with built-in high-resolution cameras offers an potential for using it in QC/QA on coarse aggregates. This project is going to develop an aggregate evaluation system that uses pocket-computer and built-in cameras for field QC/QA.
