Title: Laboratory Evaluation of Warm Asphalt for Use in Virginia
Contact: Stacey D. Diefenderfer
Project No.: 80577
Target Date: 12/19/2008
Abstract: Several processes have been developed that claim to reduce the mixing and compaction temperatures of hot mix asphalt without sacrificing the quality of the resulting pavement. Investigation of these warm asphalt processes is necessary for an understanding of the preferred methods for application in Virginia and the development of standards and specifications necessary to successfully implement the technology. Once practical methods for implementation and proposed standards and specifications are identified, laboratory testing will be performed to consider design requirements and to evaluate the mixtures and verify the proposed design and testing protocols. Inclusion of warm asphalt technology as an option for paving operations shows promise in providing benefits to both VDOT and the contracting community.
